Eye eye Captain and welcome aboard the Royal Eagle
A wonderful large naive scratch built model of an old steamer with an internal clockwork mechanism that drives the paddles.
Lovingly made with great details and colour. All in a shipshape manner, just wind her up, pull out the control knob and you’ll be steaming off in to the sunset! Or, display her indoors on the scratch built stand.
Comes with its original winder and handle that you clip on to make it easier to carry.
The model is of the famous local Southend ship, The Royal Eagle. Launched with a bottle of whisky in 1932 she was one of the biggest, fastest, luxury Paddle Steamers on the London to Southend, Ramsgate, Margate service. More than half a million passengers travelled on her every summer. Between 1932 and 1938 she was reputed to have carried over three million passengers.
In September 1939 the Royal Eagle, with other vessels evacuated 19,578 children from Thames side towns to the relative safety of the East Coast, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Yarmouth. She was requisitioned by the Admiralty in October 1939 where she was based at Sheerness and converted to an Anti-Aircraft Ship protecting the convoys in the Thames estuary. In 1940 she played a major part in rescuing troops from Dunkirk.
